KLC Graded Reading Sets Vol. 1–3

kanji learners course book cover

A new serial called The Kanji Learner'southward Course Graded Reading Sets by Keys to Japanese only came out this calendar month. Every bit the title suggests, the 3 volumes currently available offer sentences that stand for with The Kodansha Kanji Learner'southward Grade book.

While it may non expect like the typical "graded reader" (which ordinarily take the class of brusk stories or kids' style books), this series does follow the nearly important rule: it only introduces kanji that y'all already know.

Now, there are a few caveats. This book assumes you "know" kanji because y'all've been using the corresponding textbook and that you already have some knowledge of Japanese grammar and not-kanji words.

This is not a graded reader for accented beginners of Japanese. But if you're already a fan of Kodansha'south KLC, then this is an absolute must to aid you beginning reading real Japanese.

For each kanji there are sentences covering all of its possible readings. The commencement few entries take tons of grammar glosses to aid you fill in the gaps of your knowledge. These glosses fifty-fifty have references to popular grammer resources like Genki, Tobira, and the Lexicon of Japanese Grammar series, where you lot can learn more nigh a given grammar point.

While only the first three of the eventual ix-series set accept been released, they encompass the offset 400 kanji taught in the KLC. The entire series will support sentences for 2,300 total kanji. That's fifty-fifty more than all of the Jōyō kanji!

And if you have questions about, you can ask them on their Facebook page. Or you can just use it to track your progress and make some Japanese learning friends!

Let me merely say that even if you aren't using this textbook on your own or in a grade, these graded readers might be a good supplement for a few reasons:

  1. Y'all should exist learning kanji anyway and these are ordered from easiest/almost mutual to hardest/least common. Odds are, no matter what y'all're using to written report kanji, these sentences will exist helpful.
  2. If you're using whatsoever of the grammar resources nosotros mentioned above, you tin can use these sentences to aid reinforce that learning too! It'south a win-win.

Oh, and the kickoff book? Admittedly complimentary. If you don't take an iOS device or a Kindle yous can merely download and apply the PDF at no cost! And then at least have a wait and meet if this is the context sentence resources of your dreams before you move on.

KANJI JLPT N5

This app has been around for a while, but some recent changes accept turned it into an entirely new resources!. The new KANJI JLPT N5 app has a simple, pleasant design and teaches the kanji and vocabulary needed to pass the JLPT N5 test (the first and lowest level). But that'southward not why nosotros like it.

The app itself offers a number of different practice quizzes to help you retrieve and solidify your kanji and vocabulary noesis. There are four basic quizzes: easy, medium, difficult, and words. The offset three are for kanji and the terminal is only vocab words (obviously).

There's fifty-fifty more variety though. Before you showtime one of the iv quizzes y'all have the option to take either a "Japanese > English language" or "English > Japanese" version. This may seem like a small-scale feature, but very few apps offering "English language > Japanese." Going both means helps you lot practice more than just recollect.

But the quizzes don't stop there. In that location are three bonus quiz types:

jlpt n5 kanji app for learning japanese
  1. Fill in the blanks
  2. Discover the antonyms
  3. Play with numbers

Beyond all this, the terminal quiz option is to make your ain using the kanji in the app. Do yous have a couple kanji y'all ever get incorrect? Put all of them in a custom quiz then you lot can study your problem kanji!

The simply issue with this app is in that location is no option to blazon in your answer. Every bit you may already know, multiple choice is not a expert way to test your cognition in something. The best mode to see if you know something is to force yourself to write or speak it. However, this app is for JLPT N5, the easiest level at that place is. And so we sympathize if you want to cut yourself some slack. Just know yous'll take to graduate from this app eventually.

The new KANJI JLPT N5 app has a uncomplicated, pleasant pattern and teaches the kanji and vocabulary needed to pass the JLPT N5 test.

Anyway, once you're done having fun and acing quizzes, the front page of KANJI JLPT N5 puts little blue-light-green marks next to kanji you've been getting correct and little reddish marks next to kanji you lot've been getting incorrect. That way you can easily run into your trouble areas and correct them.

If you're a beginner just trying to pass N5, this is a nice little app to aid yous get at that place. Information technology isn't all you need (there's no grammar or reading comprehension) but for kanji and vocab it'south a nice start.

There weren't many "made to teach you Japanese" resources that came out this month then now it'due south time for the honorable mentions! These tin can exist used to help you learn and practice your Japanese (simply kind of in a roundabout way). Yous may not demand them, but they could be helpful to your studies.

Wakarukana is a weird trivial website that popped upward at the end of the month. Information technology does something new and unique that may or may non be really helpful. We're honestly not 100% sure nonetheless.

The site offers a (growing) number of Japanese texts and media including manga, books, and anime. You can sort past category and five difficulty levels: very easy, easy, medium, hard, and very hard.

When you notice a manga, book, or anime you lot desire to become into, click on it and you lot're brought to a page with v sentences from that series. These five sentences are random, and representative of the difficulty level that book or prove presents.

You read the sentences, and if yous tin understand them completely, cheque the little boxes side by side to them (or don't) and the site tells you how easy reading or watching that thing will be for you.

This basically helps you lot bypass asking people in forums whether they think you're set to endeavour reading Dragon Brawl. Instead, click on Dragon Brawl in Wakarukana, read through the sentences and say, "Oh heck yeah, I understand all of this!" or "Oh… I guess I have more studying to do."

Or "Heck yeah, I can employ this to study all these things I don't know yet!"

Ane large plus: for manga and books, the sentences include or omit furigana where the original text does (or does not). That way you lot know if it really is your level. You lot should only be looking for books that take furigana on words you lot aren't familiar with, otherwise you're cheating yourself.

One big negative: anime audio was just added and the quality isn't quite at that place nevertheless. Merely for a site that literally just launched and started feverishly expanding its content, nosotros weren't expecting audio at all. For now, we recommend avoiding the anime section completely until information technology improves.

If y'all desire to try reading more native Japanese material, yous can use it as a quick check to see if said material is above or beneath your current abilities. You lot should still look for actual examples before you buy them in person or online, just as it grows, Wakarukana could be a nice, quick way to find new Japanese media to consume.

Kyotogram AI Chatbot

kyotogram ai chatbot for japan travel

Similar to Tabiko, which nosotros covered in April, Kyotogram AI Chatbot is a bot you tin talk with to help plan your trip to Nippon! Y'all choose the city and the blazon of assist y'all're looking for, and and then the bot immediately sends you lists of options to cull from.

I won't go too deep into this, just I do desire to say: if the reason you haven't gone to Nippon to commencement using Japanese is because you don't know where to get-go, showtime here. It's simply a bot. Information technology's not a person (though information technology was designed by them) so you don't have to be embarrassed.

Just plan an imaginary trip if you want. But remember, the best mode to practice your Japanese is to actually use it with real humans. And then go for it!

The Legends of Localization team at Fangamer, who brought us such hits as Legends of Localization Book 1: The Legend of Zelda and Legends of Localization Book ii: EarthBound (which we covered in Feb) is dorsum with a new, much smaller, much less intense volume chosen This be book bad translation, video games! It'due south a book about foreign and entertaining mistakes in video game translation history.

If you've been following this series, this book is similar a mini-version of Retro Game Super Translation Selection we covered final calendar month. However, this wasn't written for a Japanese audience and translated into English. Information technology was written with an English-speaking viewpoint in mind.

It covers the various issues surrounding all these sad, lamentable translations: why they exist, the effects they had, and why we really shouldn't ever let computers translate our man languages.

While it doesn't actually contain whatever Japanese or Japanese-English language comparisons, like Retro Game Super Translation Pick, it does go into a cursory history of Japanese and English, their interactions with each other, as well equally common problems in commercial translation. And the volume tells yous why Japanese games include and then much awkward, baroque English, and why translations of Japanese games have so many super funky typos.

Sunshine Sento Sake

screenshot from sunshine sento sake on amazon prime

First, I want to outset by saying a big give thanks y'all to Michelle W. for sending this our way. We would have completely missed it if not for her!

Second, if you liked Samurai Gourmet you'll dear Sunshine Sento Sake! (Equally long as you lot're okay with seeing a ton of butts and old homo bodies.)

No Japanese form yous always take will teach you sentō etiquette. There are sure rules you won't be able to learn unless you lot have an former homestay grandfather or… you lookout this show.

Sunshine Sento Sake is virtually a immature salaryman who works for an advertising company and isn't very good at his job. Instead of looking for more customers around the metropolis, he ends up going to the local sentō (a specific blazon of public bath in Nippon) and then getting a beer and some beer-appropriate foods.

The bear witness doesn't quite meet the production quality of Samurai Gourmet, simply it does take all the same amuse. Why is this of import for you, a Japanese learner?

Considering going to sentō is something everyone should practise at least once or twice in their lifetime! They're disappearing, you know! Immature people just don't go to sentō like they used to, and so they're all shutting downward!

*ahem*

What I mean to say is, no Japanese class you lot ever take volition teach you sentō etiquette. There are sure rules and customs and things you just don't practise; things you lot won't exist able to learn unless you have an old homestay grandpa or… you watch this evidence.

Oh yeah, and the Japanese is perfect for late-beginner to intermediate types who want to learn all nigh sentō: paying, where to put your wearing apparel, where to put that towel (at least if you're a person with 金玉), when yous should bathe, and what different sentō offer. In that location'due south besides a whole bunch of other things about piece of work language, restaurant ordering, and much more.

In that location are 12 episodes and they all have English language subtitles (no Japanese, I'thousand afraid). You demand an Amazon Prime number account to scout, but it seems similar all of united states accept 1 at this point. Prime number Twenty-four hour period may be a bust, but hey, adorable Japanese shows to study with + two day shipping is totally worth information technology, ね?

SuperKanaDrill: Acquire Japanese Hiragana & Katakana

super kana drill learn japanese app

Final, but not least, nosotros as well missed this resource from March called SuperKanaDrill: Learn Japanese Hiragana & Katakana, a cute little app for beginners to learn hiragana, katakana, and nigh 80 super common words. It'due south clean, elementary, and teaches the basics of hiragana and katakana for free.

warning screen from super kana drill app

When yous open the app information technology immediately lets you choose which "alphabet" you'd like to acquire. Then information technology quizzes you on different combinations of those first v (あいうえお) with multiple choice answers (you already know how we experience about multiple choice here, but once more, beginners go some slack). At that place are three types of quizzes:

  1. Japanese to English
  2. English to Japanese
  3. Audio to Japanese

It's all dainty and random, which is good for your brain. But there is a catch – every five mistakes you are shown an ad as punishment. The first time you practice it yous go a little message (pictured correct).

Pretty practiced motivation, I'd say.

Other options include toggling the English in the overview on/off as well equally changing the amount of your reviews from v, x, or 20.

If you're trying to get into Japanese for the beginning time, this free app could assistance start you on your manner!
